SUMMARY:Veteran's Day-1pm Dismissal
DESCRIPTION:Field Manœuvres
\nRichard Aldington
\n1892 – 1962
\n
              (Outpost Duty)
\n
\nThe long autumn grass beneath my body
\nSo
 aks my clothes in dew\;
\nWhere my knees press into the ground
\nI can feel
  the damp earth.
\n
\nIn my nostrils is a smell of crushed grass\,
\nWet pi
 ne-cones and bark.
\n
\nThrough the bronze pine trunks
\nGlitters a silver
 segment of road.
\n
\nInterminable squadrons of silver and grey horses
\nPa
 ce in long ranks the blank fields of heaven.
\n
\nThere is no sound\;
\nThe
  wind hisses gently through the pine-needles\;
\nThe flutter of a finch’s
  wings about my head
\nIs violent as distant thunder\,
\nAnd the shrill fli
 ght of a gnat
\nSounds loud and clear.
\n
\nI am “to fire at the enemy co
 lumn
\nAfter it has passed”—
\nBut my rifle (loaded with “blank”)
\
 nLies untouched before me\,
\nMy spirit follows the gliding clouds
\nAnd my
  lips murmur of the mother of beauty
\nStanding breast-high in golden broom

\nAmong the English pine-woods!
\n
\nThis poem is in the public domain.
